چکیده

A concept for the efficient generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with ultrashort duration close to the single-cycle limit is presented. The scheme is based on grating coupling and laser pulses with wavefront rotation (WFR), so that the resonance condition for SPP excitation is satisfied only for a time window shorter than the driving pulse. The feasibility and robustness of the technique is investigated by means of simulations with realistic parameters. In optimal conditions, we find that a 29.5 fs pulse with an 800 nm wavelength can excite SPPs with <4 fs duration (∼1.5 laser cycles) and a peak field amplitude ∼2.7 times the peak value for the laser pulse.

Surface plasmon enhanced electron acceleration with few-cycle laser pulses

Surface plasmon enhanced electron acceleration is a recently discovered efficient particle acceleration phenomenon in the nanoscale-confined field of surface electromagnetic waves. For the generation and spatial/spectral control of keV-energy electrons generated, this way few-cycle laser pulses can be utilized particularly well. We present numerical results based on a simple model of this pheno...

Gain assisted propagation of surface plasmon polaritons on planar metallic waveguides.

The propagation of surface plasmon polaritons on metallic waveguides adjacent to a gain medium is considered. It is shown that the presence of the gain medium can compensate for the absorption losses in the metal. The conditions for existence of a surface plasmon polariton and its lossless propagation and wavefront behavior are derived analytically for a single infinite metal-gain boundary. In ...

Surface-plasmon wavefront and spectral shaping by near-field holography

A R TI CL E Abstract Surface-plasmon-polariton waves are twodimensional electromagnetic surface waves that propagate at the interface between a metal and a dielectric. These waves exhibit unusual and attractive properties, such as high spatial confinement and enhancement of the optical field, and are widely used in a variety of applications, such as sensing and subwavelength optics. The ability...

Propagation of femtosecond surface plasmon polariton pulses on the surface of a nanostructured metallic film: space-time complex amplitude characterization.

Ultrashort surface plasmon polariton (SPP) pulses, propagating on the surface of a nanostructured metallic film, are characterized in space and time using time-resolved spatial-heterodyne imaging. Optical pulses are coupled from free space into various surface modes using a 2D array of circular nanoholes, and spatial amplitude and phase characteristics of the scattered surface field are measure...

Generation of intensity-controlled two-dimensional shape-preserving beams in plasmonic lossy media

Two-dimensional surface-plasmon polariton waves, which propagate at a metal/dielectric interface, exhibit unique and attractive properties. These extraordinary properties, however, are accompanied by fundamentally inherent losses. The latter is probably the most pronounced challenge in the field of plasmonics and a true bottleneck for many applications. Shape-preserving beams, on the other hand...
